Christmas is a time filled with traditions, one of which is the evocative Lucia procession where children carry candles and sing the special Santa Lucia song.
Christmas is the festival of hearts and a time of cosy gatherings, where songs and candles are in focus – and Advent and Lucia processions are no exception. We light the Advent candles on the four Sundays leading up to Christmas Eve and hold the Lucia procession on St. Lucy’s Day on 13th December.
Lucia processions are not an old tradition in Denmark. The tradition only emerged in the 1950s, but the Danes have taken the evocative tradition to heart, and many children now walk in the Lucia processions on St. Lucy’s Day on 13th December, welcoming Christmas with songs, light and warmth.
